Slate is a fine-grained, metamorphic rock that is derived from sedimentary shale deposits. Shale is ancient silt and clay beds that have been compressed
and heated over time. The shale, through its metamorphic life cycle, "grows-up" to be slate, and eventually a rock termed gneiss.Slate is a very strong, impermeable material that is generally used for
flooring tile, fireplace surrounds, roofing tile, billiard tables, and as we have all seen, blackboards in classrooms. The available finishes for slate include cleft (rough), bush hammered, and honed. Due to the
fine-grained, softer particles that make up slate, it cannot be polished to a high luster shine like marble and granite. Slate is available in a variety of colors such as greens, grays, blacks, purple, and even
multicolored materials. You can also find slate that has distinctive veining, and rich character. |
